Perez Hilton’s all-time favorite diva, Madonna, has some big news. After months of heavy promotion, her latest release “MDNA” has topped the U.S. Billboard 200 chart and iTunes charts all over the world.
Perez shared his excitement with B96/Chicago. “Major congratulations go to her (Madonna). She officially now has the #1 album in America. Her latest release MDNA sold 357,943 copies its first week, which is a big accomplishment.”
Madonna may be the Queen of Pop, but she has a lot of younger competition striving to oust her from her throne.
Perez reported, “Her last album ‘Hard Candy’ sold 280,000 its first week, and 357,000 is the biggest first week sales for an album this year, and it’s also a lot more than Beyonce’s last first week sales. Her last album sold 317,000 in the first week, and it’s more than Britney Spears, Katy Perry, and Rihanna.”
What’s the difference between “Hard Candy” and “MDNA”? Perez thinks, “The Super Bowl was big. There were pre-orders around that. She took a break between the albums, and people were hungry for Madonna.”
According to Business Week, “Sales were aided by a successful album-sales promotion involving Madonna’s upcoming world tour.” It’s her best retail performance in 12 years, since some of her concertgoers got the album with ticket purchases for her world tour.
“MDNA” is her eighth album to reach to top of the Billboard 200 chart, and this is her best debut week since the release of her album “Music” in 2000, which sold 420,000 copies.
There have been other successful marketing and sales tactics used by artists to ensure high album sales. Forbes recalls Lady Gaga’s success with her last release. “Last year, retailers and others objected when amazon.com did a 99 cent promotion with Lady Gaga for her ‘Born this Way’ album. But Interscope sold their bulk of CDs in the first two weeks. The amazon promotion inflated Gaga’s sales by 440,000 copies to 1.1 million.”
